You lie in bed and talk on telephone every night. You cannot wait until the doors to the Jailhouse opens for visitation. The opportunity to gaze through the glass at him weekly is just enough to keep hope alive. He is extremely good-looking, soft spoken and well built. Any woman would very easily be smitten with a man of his appearance under normal circumstances. You almost wonder why he is even interested in you because he appears so together for someone incarcerated. Your life has not been easy, and you are hoping that he is the missing piece of the puzzle. So far, things have been great; the two of you seem to have no complaints. He makes you feel like you are loved and needed. You spend countless hours on the phone with him daily, and he is always interested in what you are doing and wearing, where you are going, who you are talking to, and who you are with.
You never dreamed that you would fall deeply in love with a detainee also known as “Inmate 15263379,” but it happened. Life is full of surprises, and this was one of them. Family and friends are trying to convince you to run while this bird is still in the cage, but you feel almost like a part of you is in there with him. So you do everything that a good jailhouse wife does. You spend weekends visiting the prison and evening waiting by the phone, for his call. Food has become your companion and you are not wearing the extra pounds that it rewards you with very well.
The two of you are both prisoners in love—provided that he is in love. Chances are that he is just in need, and there is a big difference between being in love and being in need. You may not have figured it out, but this gentleman definitely needs you in his life right now, and that is all right. The question is will he still have the same necessity for you to be in his life, when the door of the cage has been opened? If you put a bird in a cage and you are this bird’s only link to the outside world, the bird will depend on you for anything and everything that is going to make its stay in the cage more comfortable. The bird may even find ways to entertain you and show you that he cares. However, once the door to the cage has been opened and the bird has use of his wings, then it is very likely he may feel the need to fly south. It is very probable that this is where the term jailbird came from. The good part about this type of relationship is that you don’t have to agonize about where he is at night, and you can feel pretty confident about what he is doing during the day.
